Kayaköy
became a ghost town in 1922. It huddles against
the slopes of a forested mountainside. The eerie
village comprises
more than 3,000 empty houses whose hollow
windows and doors remind you of the faces of
phantoms.
Once upon a
time 25,000 Greeks populated the village. But
when Greece repatriated its inhabitants, every
last soul abandoned the family homes. Churches,
public buildings, even a pharmacy and post
office, today remain mournfully deserted.
A day's itinerary includes a guided tour via an
easy stone pathway walk
through Kayaköy.
Next is an
invitation to an al fresco lunch atop the Kayaköy
Wine House. The proprietors collect choice wines
from every region of Turkey and present their
one of a kind tasting throughout the meal. Food
is served family-style and represents a classic
yet personally prepared Turkish mezze.
After lunch a short drive is planned through
pine forests to Kayaköy
lagoon. The lagoon separates the Aegean Sea from
Gemiler Island that dates to more than 4,000
years ago.
Photography is encouraged during the entire
tour. Kayaköy
village houses, pastoral views from the
restaurant and sunset over the lagoon are not to
be missed.
