Saklikent
and Tlos are situated close together and are a
mere 35-40 minutes by car from Fethiye. The
short drive makes it possible to visit both
sites in one day.
Saklikent
is a breathtaking natural wonder. It can be
describe as longest and deepest canyon in
Turkey. It was formed eons ago when the mountain
was split down its middle by an earthquake. The
split forms a high opening of 300 meters from
the streambed to mountaintop. From spring to the
end of summer ice-cold water from melted snow in
the Taurus Mountains flows through the gorge on
its way to the sea.
Our
Saklikent itinerary centres around an easy and
enjoyable trek up this canyon stream. Slip-proof
shoes are provided on site, making the walk
along the streambed safe yet exciting. On hot
summer days Saklikent is a cool paradise.
Lunch
is served on wooden platforms suspended over the
flowing river. Seating is luxuriously casual -
diners lounge on Turkish carpets and plump
oversized pillows. (Napping is encouraged!)
Lunch specialties include fresh trout, chicken
and lamb dishes, numerous selections of fruit
and vegetable salads and
tall, cool drinks.
Tlos
was one of the six main cities of Lycia in the
Xanthos valley. Tlos was inhabited up to the
19th century.
Our
itinerary includes visits to an acropolis,
amphitheatre,
second century Roman walls, Lycian
sarcophagi, temple tombs, and rock carvings such
as Pegasus.
Mythology
records that the legendary hero, Bellerophon,
was punished by the Lycian King Iobates for an
inappropriate love affair and was sent to kill
the Chimera (a fire-breathing monster). Athena
gave Pegasus to Bellerophon and with the help of
the winged horse he killed the monster. After
succeeding Bellerophon married the King's
daughter and produced the future kings of Lycia.
We
also chance on a fortress built during the
Ottoman Empire and situated atop the acropolis.
The view of the valley below and towering
mountains in the background is impressively
picturesque.
Other
sites in Tlos are the Byzantine basilica with
its remains of a Roman gymnasium and bath and
Yedi Kapi-- "the seven doors".
